This chessboard is truly one-of-a-kind, as it has been meticulously handcrafted using only recycled and upcycled materials. The playing board itself is made up of white and black squares, which were created by melting down discarded single-use plastics, specifically PP - 5. The white squares were formed using old milk bottles, while the black squares were fashioned from bottle tops. To give the pieces a unique marbled effect, various other pieces of different colors were added to the mix. The wooden parts of the board were also upcycled, utilizing reclaimed wood from skirting boards. To ensure the longevity of the board, it has been finished with a glossy and durable varnish.
In addition to the chessboard, the set includes a set of pieces and two boxes for storage. The 24 draughts pieces are also made from recycled milk bottles and bottle tops, and the boxes themselves are created from a different type of recycled plastic (PP - 5), which comes from detergent bottle lids and similar closures, all of which are collected locally and melted down to form the boxes.
The chessboard itself is compact in size, measuring 35cm x 35cm x 4cm, and it weighs approximately 1kg. This makes it the perfect size for playing at home or even while traveling. Overall, this chessboard is a true testament to the power of upcycling and the potential of using discarded materials to create beautiful and functional items.
