In Māori myth, the kōkako filled its wattles with water and brought it to Maui as he fought the sun. Maui rewarded the bird by making its legs long and slender, enabling it to bound through the forest with ease.

Interesting Kōkako Facts:
- North Island Kōkako have a pink wattle that turns blue as they mature.
- South Island Kōkako are presumed extinct as there have been no confirmed sightings since 1967.
Although there have been recordings of songs that may be elusive birds, one as recently as
December 2021. - Female North Island Kōkako do all the brooding of their 50 day incubation,
making them more vulnerable to predation than males.
