A little insight into the design:
Our idea is to create a strong and durable piece of furniture that combines the exciting aesthetics of recycled plastic with traditionally hand worked wood to highlight the beauty of each material without making either non-recyclable.
Each stool uses 2.2kg of plastic waste that is collected from our local community in Glasgow. The plastic is sorted, cleaned, shredded and moulded in our workshop to create the unique stool tops. After trialling a few methods we have decided on threading the legs, essentially making them into large wooden bolts that can be easily assembled without tools. They are simply twisted into place until tight.
Using no glue or manufactured components in the design is more sustainable in terms of resources used and much better for packaging and shipping to customers. The hardwood timber we use for lathing the legs all comes from sustainably managed woodlands within 50 miles of Glasgow. Knowing the origin of each part of the design is important to our philosophy of having as little environmental impact as possible.
